Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads

How Local Services Ads differ from standard Google Search ads for US service businesses, including screening, billing, and when to use each.

People working at computers in an office. Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads

Local Services Ads and Google Search ads both put a service business in front of someone who is looking. They are not the same product, and a proposal that treats them as a toggle is leaving money or risk unexplained.

Both can sit inside Google Ads management. The mechanics of classic search are in the beginner guide.

| | Local Services Ads | Google Search ads | | -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | | What you buy | A profile, reviews, and a lead button or call | A text ad that sends people to a page you control | | How you pay | Typically per lead | Per click | | Screening | Google screens many categories | No background check | | What you control | You do not write a traditional keyword list | Match types, negatives, schedules, and the landing page | | What you get when it works | A lead | A visit you still have to turn into a call or a form |

What are you buying?

Local Services Ads. A profile with your business name, reviews, and a lead button or call. You typically pay per lead, not per click. Google screens many categories. The ad can appear above the map. You do not write a traditional keyword list. You dispute leads that do not match the rules Google publishes.

Search ads. A text ad on a query you target, sending people to a page you control. You pay per click. You choose match types, negatives, schedules, and the landing page. There is no Google background check. There is also no lead until the person calls or fills the form.

One is a lead product with a platform review. The other is traffic you are responsible for converting.

Where they show up

Local Services Ads, when available, sit in a unit of their own, often above the map pack. Search ads sit in the ad slots around the organic results. The map pack itself is not either product. Ranking there is the work in how to rank in the map pack.

A person can see your Local Services Ad, your map listing, and your Search ad on one screen. That is not three strategies by accident. It is one brand appearing in three inventories. You should know which click came from which, or the report will take credit twice.

Cost shape

Local Services Ads charge when Google records a lead. A cheap lead that is a wrong number still needs a dispute process. Search ads charge for the click even if the person hangs up. A high cost per click can still be a cheap job if the page and the phone answer convert.

Neither number is "the" price of a customer. Track booked jobs for a month before you declare a winner.

Which to run

Use Local Services Ads when your category is eligible, you can pass the screen, and you want a simpler lead flow. Use Search ads when you need a specific service page, a query Google's lead profile will not isolate, or a category that is not eligible.

Many home service companies run both once the first one is stable. Starting both on day one, with no one reading either report, is how the budget duplicates itself. A plumbing account that needs the Search side spelled out, emergency versus scheduled work, is Google Ads for plumbers.

What we will not claim

We will not promise that one product is cheaper in your city. We will say which one you are eligible for, what the screen involves, and how the leads will be counted. Screening rules change. Your license and insurance have to match what you submit. A failed screen is not an ads optimization problem. It is an eligibility problem.

If the website is what loses the lead after the click, fix that page before you scale Search. Local Services Ads hide some of that problem because the lead can happen inside Google. They do not fix a crew that never calls back.

What else do people ask?

Q01Are Local Services Ads available for every business?

No. Google limits them to certain service categories and locations, and many require a background check or license check. If your trade is not on the list, Search ads are the product you can actually buy.

Q02Do Local Services Ads replace the map pack?

No. They are paid leads. The map pack is the organic local block. A complete profile still matters. See the map pack guide.

Q03Which one should a new contractor start with?

If the category is eligible and you can pass screening, Local Services Ads are often the simpler first test. Search ads are the better fit when you need to control the query and the landing page.

Q04Is a Local Services Ads lead fee the same as an agency fee?

No. Local Services Ads typically bill per lead, paid to Google. Search ads bill per click, paid to Google. An agency management fee, if you hire one, is separate from both.
